Dear Partners,
I am delighted yet humbled to write to you in my capacity as the new elected Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.
And I am honored and delighted by the company of friends, colleagues, and devoted volunteers who serve with me on the Board and committees. To continue my ten-year association with such an exceptional organization is a privilege. As White Memorial Medical Center nears 100 years of service to the community, it is fulfilling to see how far we have come and exciting to consider our future.
Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes -- these are the most serious threats to the lives of people in our community. In some cases they can be prevented through education and enhanced public awareness. Increasingly sophisticated technology and refined methods means they can be treated with less risk and better outcomes than ever before. The continued development of White Memorial as a renowned non-profit teaching hospital and a growing center for innovative and culturally competent nursing, medical, and clinical excellence means WMMC will occupy a “larger footprint in the Greater Los Angeles healthcare landscape” than in the past.
Thanks to donor support WMMC has continued to make important investments to address pressing health care issues and serve as an economic engine in our community – despite the economy of the past two years. The hospital has already met the state-required seismic code by building a new $220 million patient facility. The new Diagnostic Imaging Center allows physicians to more quickly diagnose heart and cancer problems and a new Ambulatory Surgery Center, due to open early in 2010 will significant reduce wait times for surgical procedures. Many of these investments were made possible by your generous support, and are paying dividends every day in terms of lives saved, health restored, and services improved. Yet there is always continued room for improvement and continued opportunity for investment.
On behalf of my fellow Board members, our staff and volunteers, I thank you for your past generosity and promise that we will continue to be good stewards of your trust.
Sincerely,
George A. Ramirez
Chair, Board of Directors
